Û ÛÛ    designs aspire to mathematical precision. Old Styles are prized    ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    for their warmth, which they achieve through heavily bracketed     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    serifs and a policy of planned inconsistencies (an Old Style's     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    lowercase c and o are thickest in different places, for example.)  ÛÛ Û

Û ÛÛ    Moderns produce the opposite result — a detached, elegant          ÛÛ Û

Û ÛÛ    Bridging these extremes is the Transitional style, which combines  ÛÛ Û

Û ÛÛ    subspecies of Transitional is the Scotch, a form of typeface       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    originating at the end of the eighteenth century, and associated   ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    with Scottish typefounders Alexander Wilson and William Miller.    ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    The opening of the Binny & Ronaldson foundry in Philadelphia,      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    begun by Scottish émigrés Archibald Binny and James Ronaldson      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    in 1796, helped establish the style in the United States, where    ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    it has since remained a fundamental part of the modern typographic ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    vocabulary. Some of the twentieth century’s most significant       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    designs are tributes to the Scotch style, including W. A.          ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    Dwiggins' interpretive Caledonia (1938), and Matthew Carter's      ÛÛ Û

Û ÛÛ    Nineteenth century Scotch faces enjoyed early popularity among     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    book printers, but the rise of industrialized newspaper            ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    publishing quickly revealed their limitations. Delicate hairlines  ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    and serifs vanished under thin ink, low quality paper, and         ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    ruthless presses that operated at breakneck speeds. Signature      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    details, like the pipe-shaped tail on the capital R and lowercase  ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    a, became traps for ink and pulp — a problem that plagued every    ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    lowercase letter in the dainty Scotch italic. The faces that       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    were gutsy and smart when carefully printed were undone by the     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    slightest variables: underinked they became dour, overinked they   ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    felt sluggish.                                                     ÛÛ Û

Û ÛÛ    Beginning in 2002, we revisited the Scotch style with the goal     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    of producing two families of fonts: a text face that would         ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    withstand the effects of different kinds of media, and a           ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    display face that would unlock the potential of the Scotch         ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    style to support a broad range of weights and widths. The          ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    result is Chronicle Text, a series of hard-working text faces      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    produced in four press-sensitive “grades”, and Chronicle Display,  ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    an abundant collection of 46 display faces that includes three     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    different widths, six different weights, and versions for two      ÛÛ Û
