Û ÛÛ    Slab serifs have been evolving for two hundred years, yet the      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    category continues to be dominated by two basic styles:            ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    Antiques and Geometrics. Antiques arise out of the same            ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    nineteenth-century tradition that produced the Modern and          ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    Scotch styles: at heart, they’re text faces, and they feature      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    all of the qualities needed to thrive at small sizes.              ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    (Antiques customarily have the traditional "two-storey" forms      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    of a and g, and a capital R that ends in a flourish.)              ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    Our Ziggurat typeface is an example of the Antique style in        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    full flower, capturing the best of what the style has to offer:    ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    it's warm, comforting, and persuasive. But this coziness comes     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    at the expense of modernity, and in the wrong context even the     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    best Antique can feel old-fashioned, musty, and irrelevant.        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ                                                                       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    The Geometric is a twentieth-century riposte to the Antique.       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    Informed by the same kind of rationalist thinking that inspired    ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    the great sans serifs of the Bauhaus, Geometrics abandon           ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    traditional forms in favor of mathematical strategies.             ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    A Geometric's O is circular rather than elliptical, and its        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    forms shed their residual contrast between thicks and thins.       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    Geometrics usually apply this same rationalism to the woollier     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    parts of the alphabet, replacing the alphabet’s beaks and tails    ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    and ball terminals with a program of matching serifs.              ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    While these faces can sometimes be bracingly modern, they’re       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    often monotonous, and many Geometrics suffer from an astringent    ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    sting that makes them difficult to use and unwelcome to read.      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ                                                                       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    When Martha Stewart Living asked us to develop a new typeface      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    for the magazine, it seemed that a slab serif could answer much    ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    of the brief. A slab could be personable, straightforward, and     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    credible, though it would take special effort to also make it      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    pretty, hard-working, and frank. Archer would have to answer       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    some formidable typographic demands, since Living is an almanac    ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    of lists, recipes, charts, diagrams, tables, calendars, and        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    glossaries. To make the typeface frank — direct, but not           ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    brusque — we introduced subtle cues from the world of type-        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    writer faces, which combine the ordinariness of Antiques with      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    the modern practicality of Geometrics. We restored the vanished    ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    "ball terminals" to the lowercase, and uncharacteristically        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    applied these gestures to the capitals as well, in order to        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    yield a font that’s friendly without being silly, and attractive   ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    without being flashy. The result is a typeface that's well-        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    mannered, easy to work with, and inviting to read.                 ÛÛ Û
