 ² ° ÛÛÛ  Burgues Script is an ode to the late 19th century American   ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  calligrapher Louis Madarasz, whose legendary pen has         ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  inspired schools of penmanship for over 100 years. His       ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  talent has caused some people to call him 'the most          ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  skillful penman the world has ever known.'                   ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ                                                               ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  I use the word 'ode' in a colloquially ambitious manner. If  ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  I was an actual poet, my words would be about things I       ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  desire but cannot attain, objects of utter beauty that make  ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  me wallow in humility, or people of enormous talent who      ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  look down at me from the clouds of genius.                   ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ                                                               ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  But I don't write poems. My work consists of letters drawn   ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  to fit together, that become an element of someone's visual  ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  poetry. I am the poet's assistant, so to speak. Once in a    ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  while, the assistant persists on what the subject of the     ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  poem will be. And occasionally, the poet gives in to the     ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  persistence. I hope you, visual poet, find my persistence    ÛÛÛ ° ²

 ² ° ÛÛÛ  examples shown in Zaner Bloser's The Secret of the Skill of  ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  Madarasz: His Philosophy and Penmanship Masterpieces, and    ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  C. W. Jones's Lessons in Advanced Engraver's Script          ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  Penmanship by L. Madarasz.                                   ÛÛÛ ° ²

 ² ° ÛÛÛ  These two references were the cornerstone for the concept I  ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  was trying to work with. I did have to change many of the    ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  letters in order to be able to produce digital calligraphy   ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  that can flow flexibly and offered the user a variety of     ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  options, while maintaining its attractive appearance. To     ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  this end, many ligatures and swashes were made, as well as   ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  full flourished sets of letters for use at the beginnings    ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  or endings of words and sentences. All of this has been      ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  tied together with OpenType and tested thoroughly within     ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  today's standard design and desktop publishing software.     ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ                                                               ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  After working with digital scripts for so long, at one       ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  point I thought that Burgues Script would become a bit of a  ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  chore to complete. I also thought that, like with most       ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  other scripts, the process would regularize itself after a   ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  while and be reduced to a mechanical habit. Surprisingly,    ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  and fortunately for me, this did not happen. The past holds  ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  as many surprises as the future. Madarasz's method of        ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  penmanship was fascinating and challenging to translate      ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  into the strict, mathematically oriented language of the     ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  computer. It seems that the extremely high contrast of the   ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  forms, coupled with the required flow and connectivity of    ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  such lettering, will always be hard work for any visual      ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  artist to produce, even with the aide of a powerful          ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  machine. I can only imagine what steady nerves and           ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  discipline Madarasz must have had to be able to produce      ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  fully flourished and sublimely connected words and           ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  sentences on a whim. One must wonder what kind of            ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  breathtaking art he would have been able to come up with if  ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  he lived today, with the computer mouse being an additional  ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  accessory in his calligrapher's toolkit.                     ÛÛÛ ° ²

 ² ° ÛÛÛ  reconcile that with the timelines of my or my colleagues'    ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  work in identity and packaging design, the mind reels. Such  ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  blinding talent from over a hundred years ago.               ÛÛÛ ° ²
