Û ÛÛ    The original drawings for FF Eureka date from 1995 when it was     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    designed for the bilingual text of "Transparency." The             ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    typeface works especially well for languages with accented         ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    characters. Many contemporary western typefaces have large         ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    x-heights which leave little room to accommodate accents, the      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    result is that they are small and cramped. However, in many        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    languages the accents are an integral part of the alphabet and     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    shouldn't be reduced in size and importance. In order to           ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    maintain a proper rhythm in the text, Bilak adjusted the           ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    proportions of the typeface. The height of the ascenders and       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    descenders is 1.7 times the x-height. This relatively small        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    x-height leaves room for longer descenders and ascenders which     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    in turn better accommodate accents and punctuation, it also        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    gives the typeface its distinctive character. The large serifs     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    visually balance the larger accents. Eureka's proportions          ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    result in an economic typeface and allow the letters to be         ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    spaced more loosely. This is important for, as Bilak says: "it     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    is the white space that we unconsciously read, not the actual      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    letterforms. Looser spacing helps to avoid the typographic         ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    noise inside a text, and retains the individuality of the          ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    letters." FF Eureka Mono 1 and 2 extend the Eureka family by a     ÛÛ Û
