Now here's something a little bit special -- a compilation...
no, am I losing you already? Snap back into it please, because
this isn't just a compilation -- it's a specially created
soundtrack to a peculiar French film. Oh did I mention they
were all exclusive tracks? Yep we've got specially crafted
contributions from Fennesz, Tim Hecker, Vladislav Delay, Pita,
Steve Roden, Francisco Lopez and many more -- it's like a
who's who of minimal electronic music really and trust me
they're not slouching on this one. Apparently the tracks were
constructed from sounds taken from train stations and trains
themselves, and that's certainly evident in many of the
compositions. Highlights unsurprisingly come from Fennesz, who
contributes a fabulously dense six-and-a-half piece of
ambience close to his work on the seminal Venice album and Tim
Hecker, whose stuttering, woolly noise makes mincemeat of the
subject matter. Less obviously though there are stunning
moments from Steve Roden who puts his highly processed
signature on the train recordings and Japanese artist Atau
Tanaka, whose piece is a masterclass in menacing ambience.
It's not often that mixed-artist compilations work, especially
for a film soundtrack, but it's clear that whoever curated
this collection knew exactly what they were doing, and the
unifying threads help to make this a truly coherent listening
experience. An excellent collection of work and one worth more
than a casual look...
