$$$$$ A great deal of interest has has been generated among $$$$$
$$$$$ educators recently by the apparent success of "synthetic $$$$$
$$$$$ phonics" in teaching people to read. There is little $$$$$
$$$$$ that is new in these methods; children were learning $$$$$
$$$$$ through phonetics in the UK in the 1950s. However the $$$$$
$$$$$ fact that a child has learned to read in this way does $$$$$
$$$$$ not mean that they will be able to spell with equal $$$$$
