Resolume is complety build to enable you to improvise your
live video performance. Everthing in resolume; all video
effects, transitions, scratching, etc are therefore realtime
and do not interrupt the playback.
To enable you to quickly improvise, all parameters are
adjustable in realtime using the keyboard or a midi-device.
Switching videos and applying effects is as easy as pressing
keys on the keyboard. Video playback can easily be reversed,
paused and it's speed adjusted with the simple touch of a
button. You can interactively change a video loop by adjusting
the in- and out-point of a clip.
All media files on your computer are directly accessable with
a thumbnail preview enabling you to quickly find the video you
are looking for.
Media playback
Resolume can display a variety of different media. Movie
formats: Mpeg, Quicktime and AVI. Flash files. Picture
sequences (.bmp .jpg .psd). And Freeframe source plugins.
Movies, flash and picture sequences all behave similar so you
can scratch a picture sequence or a flash animation just as
easy as a movie.
A freeframe source plugin is a small piece of software that
generates graphics that are programmed using the open
freeframe plugin standard. These plugins can be used to
program any type of motion graphics you can imagine.
Flash files are great in resolume. They provide a very high
image quality because no compression is used and their vector
data can be rendered smoothly at any resolution. Using flash
action scripting you can interactively display any text send
in through resolume. Even the entire audio analysis data of
resolume is available in action scripting, enabling you to
write complex audio visualizations in flash.
Effects
Resolume has over 60 built-in effects. These effects range
from completely distorting the image to simple colour
correction filters. One effect can be applied to an individual
video clip and you can apply up to three global effects.
An effect can have up to 4 parameters. These parameter values
can be set by hand using the slider or the parameter value can
by automated in different ways. You can play an effect
parameter like you do with te timeline, link it too the audio
FFTs or link it to the mouse position.
Freeframe plugins
Freeframe is an open source multi platform video effects
plugin system that we developed together with the creators of
VJamm and Pete Warden. A freeframe plugin in resolume can be
an effect that manipulates video but it can also generate
images. And a mixer freeframe plugin can be used to overlay
video layers.
There are over 150 freeframe plugins available and more are
released every week. Check our download page to download loads
of freeframe plugins.
For more info about freeframe and the available freeframe
plugins visit www.freeframe.org
Cameras
Resolume can display the image from any capture device
connected to your computer. A capture device can be a (analog
or DV) camera, a webcam or even a TV-tuner.
Live input can be used like any other video so you can overlay
it with the layers to mix it with other footage. You can apply
effects and use the record function to sample a bit of live
action.
Multiple screens
Resolume can use multiple displays to show different content
on different screens. You can show different content on the
displays by routing different layers or layer combinations to
different displays. This way you can for instance show the
resolume interface (with a small preview) on a monitor in
front of you. And then show the combination of layer 1&2 on
projector 1 and show layer 3 on projector 2. Or if you have 4
displays you can use one for the interface and send the 3
different layers to 3 different projectors.
Audio analysis
Resolume can do full 18 band FFT audio analysis to make
various parameters bounce to the music. Audio analyis can be
used to drive effect parameters or automatically scratch a
video to the beat.
The full audio analysis data is also available for scripting
in flash files. This enables you to build advanced audio
visualizations in flash.
BPM
With the BPM clock in Resolume it is very easy so synchronise
video clips to the tempo (Beats Per Minute) of the music. By
setting the the video clips in BPM mode the speed of the clips
is automatically adjusted to fit in any number of beats. The
BPM clock can be set manually or can be linked to an external
Midi clock.
With this function your visuals are so easily synchronised to
the beat of the music! The BPM clock can also be used to drive
effect parameters and to have them play synchronised to the
music.
Network streaming
If you run resolume on two comuters you do not need a video
mixer to mix these two. You can simply stream the output from
one computer over a network into resolume on the second. On
the second computer you can then mix it with more footage or a
live camera, apply effects, record it, manipulate it anyway
you like.
This feature is great for VJ teams who want to work with
multiple computers on multiple projectors. The possibilities
are endless.
MIDI
Besides the computer keyboard and a mouse you can control all
the functions and parameters of Resolume with a midi-device.
This enables you to improvise more quickly and play Resolume
like an instrument.
DMX
DMX can be used to control Resolume but also to send DMX
signals from flash movies playing in Resolume. This enables
you to integrate your visuals and video with lights, strobes,
lasers, moving heads, LED pannels and any other device that is
DMX compatible. DMX signals can be send via Artnet over a
computer network or via USB with the Enttec DMX USB Pro
Interface.
Feedback
One of Resolumes' unique abilities is to feed the video output
back into the mix, creating feedback effects. This can be used
to apply feedback effects to your existing footage and it also
enables you create abstract imagery without the use of any
premade footage!
The demo video shows what Resolume can achieve by combining
feedback and real-time effects. No premade footage was used to
create this video, it's all generated by Resolume.
Checkout the feedback tutorial in the manual to get started
with creating feedback effects in Resolume.
Changlog for resolume 2.4 beta -> 2.4 final
New features
- Added new overlay mode called Alpha Luma
- Midi start/stop configuration
- Hold down the 'Ctrl' key when using bpm up/down controls and
you will be able to jump by 4 beats at the time instead of
only 1
- Removed continue/start_over in effects
Fixed bugs
- midiclock pause doesn't work
- problem loading some pictures
- bpm is not calculated for clips in decks made with older
versions of resolume
- a bpm bounced clip flashes at the end of the bounce when the
beats count is 4
- masks are upside down
- flash playback is stumbling
- bpm opacity min-max doesn't work when using midi clock
- some footage files in the demo decks do not play
- file browser shows size 0x0 for pictures when in thumbnail
mode
- slide open wipe has a bug, only one side actually slides
- 'lo rez' wipe doesn't work correclty with static footage
- big pictures sometimes fail to load
- feedback buffer on fx on channel isn't cleared on channel
switch
- interface gets very slow and interrupts playback
- right clicking a channel with an effect resets the params if
they are animated
- when triggering a channel with an animated effect the
param's animation should be reset
- amount of beats in bpm mode is limited to 64 beats
- Select Bpm, then set direction to backward.Select the clip
to play on a layer: it plays forward.
- bypassing effect slot with the mouse/midi controller doesn't
work properly
- bpm bounce mode on opacity layer sometimes flashes, layer1
is shortly shown instead of layer 2 and vice versa
- BPM midi/key shortcuts
- decks tab: "new section" and moving decks to "new section"
(category)
- setting the step value of a midicontroller in the
preferences window has no effect when using the litlle arrow
keys
Changlog for resolume 2.3 -> 2.4 beta
New features
- Bpm playback (sync to internal BPM tempo or Midiclock)
- Support for DMX protocol, ArtNet en Enttec USB
- Flash To DMX (send dmx from flash through resolume)
- Feedback option on effects
Major improvements
- We made some major speed improvements, so the overall
performance has been given a big boost.
- Audio responsiveness has been greatly improved.
- Playback speed of quicktime has been improved
- Freeframe internal parameter range has been changed, range
was just too inaccurate. Especially when animating
parameters this is a good improvement. Animation will be
more fluent and accurate.
Minor Improvements
- Resolume Freeframe plugins can be in different
subdirectories, all subdirectories below the plugins folder
are scanned (1 level deep) and placed in different
categories.
- Resolume Freeframe plugins now all support processframecopy
and support 32 bit mode (so they can be used in Freechain or
Wax for instance).
- Speed of Masks and Transitions is improved.
- We changed some interface controls so that they behave
better. We changed the following controls: up-down controls,
fps control on the effect parameters
- Resolume will still run when another application is active.
So output will continue when switching to other
applications.
- added midi-shift, use it to set resolume in shift mode
- added midi-ctrl, use it to set resolume in ctrl mode (set
effect on active clip/layer)
- right click on rgb buttons of a layer or effect to select
that color channel specificly and deselect the others
- capture driver list can be refreshed to be able to access
camera's that have been connected after having started up
resolume.
- reduced flickering in some interface elements wich are
updated frequently
- the ESCAPE key brings you back to the screen setup when the
interface screen is set to fullscreen.
- new... button for midi settings file, creates a blank new
setting file.
- new... button for dmx settings file, creates a blank new dmx
settings file.
- playback of pictures is set to a default of 15 instead of 25
- Alt+Drag fx, you can press Alt at any time during the drag.
Alt sets opacity to zero and disables feedback
- Resolumes' settings are saved in the users' My documents
folder. we did this so that users without administrator
rights still can use resolume. Resolumes' settings are now
saved in the users' ~/my documents/resolume/ folder. You do
still need administrator rights to install Resolume.
- the first time that resolume is started the demo decks are
copied to the decks folder of the user. Those deck files
will be loaded on startup.
- you can enable logging in resolume by starting up resolume
with the log param example: c:\program files\resolume
2.4\resolume.exe debug log
- we improved the method for spotting vidnet servers
(computers running resolume) on the local network
- added midi and key shortcuts to cycle through decks (next
deck, previous deck)
- when right clicking an effect param it will be reset to it's
default state.
Fixed bugs
- some midi controller functions didn't work with endless
controllers. Fixed as many as we could find
- the set-inpoint and set-outpoint functions now also work
with endless controllers.
- textspeed could get to zero, divide by zero error occured.
So flash movies could stop playing.
- Freeframe mixer plugins, the list of mixer plugins could
exceed the boundaries of the screen. we fixed it by adding a
scrollbar to the lists, the scrollbar only appears when
necessary
- the effect layer up/down and layer up/down seemed to be
mixed up, is fixed.
- when triggering an effect by midi the opacity was not loaded
correctly, it allways set to full. Now it takes the value
configured by the user.
- Sometimes the order of capture devices happened to be mixed
up, so when saving a capture-device in a deck it would
sometimes appear as another capture device the next time.
- plugins with the same pluginuniqueid got into conflict,
parameters were merged when this occured. Now when a plugin
is found with a id wich allready exists it is skipped as
well as it's parameters.
- move up/down effect key shortcuts work again, 1024 version
- flash clips weren't allways removed from a layer correctly
(still playing in the background) when it was cleared or
replaced by another clip. Now it is replaced by the
'empty.swf' file, to properly clean up flash.
- mpeg files sometimes failed to load, when the browser
preview was on you couldn't load the .mpeg files in the
deck. is fixed
- update fx parameters is more fluent.
- levon wrote: on the top layer.. put any free frame source
effect. then from the browser drag a different source plugin
to the same clip... overwriting it. it will freeze the out
put to the original plugin, and you have to restart to fix
it, this is fixed
- 'delay film' freeframe plugin had memory leak, was not
cleaned up properly
- right click an opacity to reset it's value to default didn't
allways work correctly when order of layers was changed
(move layer up or down).
- saving of decks is now only possible when resolume is not
loading files or decks at the background. Before it was
possible to save a deck before while resolume was still
loading files, this could cause errors.
- resolume flash playback has been changed, when resolume's
timelinemode is set to flash (flash controls playback); Each
time a flash file is loaded the flashcontrol on the
background is recreated to prevent caching problems. Control
is not recreated when timelinemode is set to 'resolume'.
- screensetup in trial mode could failed the second or third
time. Is fixed.
- multifullscreen mode is improved. Before when the interface
and second screen were set to fullscreen the focus could be
lost (by clicking on the screens) so that the output would
stop. That is fixed.
- repaint of sliders for fx has been improved to minimize
flickering.
