What is Deinterlace?
You possibly noticed that in many movies - especially shot with home
camcorders - in episodes where fast movement is recorded, the image looks
blurred and stripped. This is because many cameras divide each frame into
even and odd lines: first the even lines are recorded, then the odd ones.
Hence, each frame you observe on your monitor is actually comprised of two
half-frames - "even" and "odd" ones. Half-frames are connected with each
other line by line - that is, the first line of the first half-frame - the
first line of the second half-frame; the second line of the first half-frame
- the second line of the second half-frame; etc. As a result, if the frame
contains fast enough movement, then on the second half-frame the moving
object has already moved to slightly different position compared to the
first
half-frame, and at the connection points the "stripes" effect occurs.
Deinterlace is a process which allows to avoid the undesirable effects
while connecting the two half-frames.
Advantages of the given filter in comparison with analogues
Existing Deinterlace filters filter the whole frame, including the
places on the frame where there was no movement, so there is a loss of
information and deterioration of video in these areas. Our filter
automatically may determine interlaced places of the frame and carry out
filtration only in these places, thus parts of the frame on which there was
no movement, remain high quality.
Many algorithms attempt to interpolate the odd lines by the even lines'
points. But when using these techniques odd lines are recreated
mathematically, thus the real object may look absolutely different. The
techniques of that kind result in losing up to 50% of the initial video
information - that is, half of the efforts you made while shooting your
video
were in vain. Our algorithm works in a principally different way. We use
specially developed motion estimation algorithm. This algorithm finds a
vector of objects displacement and returns them in necessary positions,
compensating thus movement between half-frames. When using this method the
frames are restored without losing any original information.
To speed up the process, the evaluation of movement is conducted in two
steps: first the raw, then the fine positioning. Besides, the filter
utilizes
the MMX extension. Currently, our filter works in a real-time mode even on
relatively weak computers - and on Athlon XP 1600+ it produces 35 frames per
second. Simple methods work faster.

How to use Deinterlace filter?
The given filter has some implementations:

multimedia application like player, the converter, etc.

How to adjust Deinterlace filter?
The current version of the filter has some methods of filtration; you
can choose them on the page "Filter settings".
* None - at a choice of this point the filter is disconnected and
deinterlacing is not produced.
* Only even rows - at a choice of the given method duplication of lines
is made, even lines are copied into odd lines without changes. The speed of
filtration is very high. Quality of filtration is bad.
* Simple interpolation - odd lines are counted on the next even lines by
methods of interpolation. The speed of filtration is high. The quality of
received image is average. Similar methods are used in the majority of
deinterlace filters.
* Area based interpolation - only those places on the frame where
interlace was found out are interpolated, the other part of the frame
remains
without changes. The speed of filtration is high. Allows saving those parts
of the frame on which there was no movement.
* Area based motion estimation - only those parts of the frame on which
deinterlace was found out are changed, though restoration is made not by a
method of interpolation, but by means of finding vectors of objects
displacement. The method is most effective. The speed of filtration is
average.
* Fields Width and Height allow setting the size of output frame.
* In the nearest future the release of the new version is expected where
new method of filtration will be added and also the algorithms searching
