   Û           The Lost World: Jurassic Park: (John Williams)               Û
   Û           Many sequels to popular action films are darker              Û
   Û           than the original. With this movie, Spielberg                Û
   Û           called in the cinematographer from Schindler's               Û
   Û           List and asked Michael Crichton to write a                   Û
   Û           similarly dark story. Likewise, John William's               Û
   Û           score for The Lost World is much darker and more             Û
   Û           brooding than the first.                                     Û
   Û                                                                        Û
   Û           For the sake of horror, Williams writes a                    Û
   Û           magnificent score for this film. The charm and               Û
   Û           dreamy mystique of Jurassic Park is completely               Û
   Û           absent from the start. The main title is a                   Û
   Û           pulsating, monstrously brass theme that rumbles              Û
   Û           beneath the surface of almost every track on the             Û
   Û           score. It lacks the personality of the two themes            Û
   Û           from the first score. Of course, there really is             Û
   Û           no need for mystery in this score --as the                   Û
   Û           audience, we all KNOW what's going to happen on              Û
   Û           Site B-- but it was the mystery in the score to              Û
   Û           Jurassic Park that made it special. The main theme           Û
   Û           to The Lost World hits you in the face like a                Û
   Û           brick at the very first moment. Granted, it is a             Û
   Û           ambitious Williams theme of epic proportion that             Û
   Û           eclipses many other modern film themes; but it               Û
   Û           does not stand up among the classic Williams                 Û
   Û           themes.                                                      Û
   Û                                                                        Û
   Û           I was disappointed by the lack of loyalty to the             Û
   Û           themes and rhythms of Jurassic Park. Sure, this              Û
   Û           score is supposed to stand alone, but Williams has           Û
   Û           always been one of the best composers of                     Û
   Û           integrating themes in between sequels. The brass             Û
   Û           theme from the first film (otherwise known as the            Û
   Û           one heard in "Journey to the Island") echoes                 Û
   Û           distantly in the background as Camp Jurassic is              Û
   Û           discovered. It only bursts on once before the end            Û
   Û           credits, and even that was a re-used cue from the            Û
   Û           first score. The main theme from Jurassic Park is            Û
   Û           not used at all before the end credits. The medley           Û
   Û           of themes heard over those credits will be                   Û
   Û           recognized by Williams fans as the suite that                Û
   Û           Williams conducts on his concert tours. This                 Û
   Û           version is a bit lackluster and has some very                Û
   Û           obvious and intrusive transitions. As an end to              Û
   Û           The Lost World and a suite for Jurassic Park, it             Û
   Û           ultimately left a sour taste in my mouth. Oddly,             Û
   Û           it doesn't feature two things that I would have              Û
   Û           expected: the The Lost World theme itself, and the           Û
   Û           use of a choir.                                              Û
   Û                                                                        Û
   Û           Overall, this score is still very good. The                  Û
   Û           sequence with the stegosaurus dinosaurs on the               Û
   Û           creek is uplifting. But with more horror elements            Û
   Û           and less emphasis on theme, it is not as enjoyable           Û
   Û           as Jurassic Park. It was a tough act to follow,              Û
   Û           and the score undoubtedly works magnificently when           Û
   Û           accompanied by the big screen. Alone it has some             Û
   Û           very driving and momentous moments --and some very           Û
   Û           good chase cues. But the lack of thematic beauty             Û
   Û           and personality causes it falls one step short of            Û
   Û           the original. The assignment for the third                   Û
   Û           Jurassic Park film has been rumoured to fall on              Û
   Û           the desk of either John Williams or James Horner.            Û
